It's easier to change a tree then it is to change the way you think about a tree. It takes a balance of both.

By this I mean you can grow the best trees ever in a pot, without a eye for styling them it means little. And you can have the greatest artistic eye ever but if you cant get a tree there or keep them alive it matters little.

Which do you think takes longer to learn your way with?

I don't waste money and I don't waste time; I chose how to spend it based on an assumption, and both the time and money are already gone either way. I play with crap and I play with OK material. It doesn't change the fact that I'm playing and having fun.
Nobody will change my mind.
If I wanted to a good return on my investments, I'd be a drug dealer. I'm not saying you can't combine the two, but why are we doing the bonsai thing again?
