Recently I bought a bunch of Camellia sansaqua from Home Depot. I posted some pictures on another thread (Sorry JoeR for hijacking your thread). (I also got schooled by Leo on Nebari and my instant gratification tendencies). In mybdefense, just saw some amazing good looking Camellia sansaqua (cotton candy and Yuletide) and cave into my obsession... I ended up buying about 20 of these plants. Of course, I want to keep my marriage, so afterwards I deviced a solution to my Camellia overcrowding problem. It is I think one of my best BONSAI GRIFTS SO FAR.

It involved getting some tall planters, making them bottomless and “beautifying” the pavers on the entrance. My plan is to upkeep these in the spirit of bonsai AND dig into the planters as soon as one of these camellias shows me her bonsai potential. What do you think ?

A couple of more photos of another Camellia I bought after. This time I drove to Ocala-FL, to Bob Wines Camellia Gardens. They have acres of camellias for sale. The prices are higher than the Home Depot's... I was able to find a Camellia Sasanqua that I couldn't resist. This was a 3-gallon "Strawberry Limedale" Camellia sansanqua ($100) with a good spread root base of about 2", a trunk of about 1", but the smallest flowers of all camellias... about 1" wide in comparison to the other Sasanqua's 2" flowers. There were much bigger of these cultivar and many others.

Pink and green, hence the name 'Strawberry Limeade', interesting. Personally I'm not a fan of green flowers, but the form, ruffled flower is nice, and the small size is much more ideal for bonsai. A very nice find, and definitely an uncommon cultivar. And leaves are smaller than average too. Nice.

A few more Camellias (writing the cultivars here before I forget):
- Camellia sasanqua “Yuletide” (7 and 15 gallon)
- Camellia (japonica x lutchuensis) “cinnamon cindy) (7 gallon - the one with the flower
- Camellia sasanqua “Leslie Ann” (2 gallon))
I keep telling my wife that She should be thankful that I am into bonsai and not guns or cars.

Camellia japonica 'Shuchuka' looks really compact...

both of these are supposed to be "miniature", thus my trying these for bonsai. Whatever else is true, the flowers will be welcome in the house by my wife who is not big on bonsai...

The pink one is really pretty. The one I got seems awfully big, even though they suggested it to be a candidate for containers.
