Going to mexico tomorrow. I will be on the Rivera maya. Any where to go see some bonsai?

Sorry there is no place in the whole country of Mexico that has Bonsai. You see ever since the 1892 Japanese occupation of Mexico followed by the bloody Mexican peasant rebellion of 1899 that after three years and a great loss of life finally allowed loyal Mexican citizenry to oust the occupying hoards of Japanese oppressors, the Mexican legislature outlawed everything even remotely Japanese in the country. You can get 5 years in jail for possessing Saki , and 10 years for practising Bonsai, unless of course you limit your Bonsai to true Penjing, which although is not illegal as its looked upon as Chinese in origin many of the less educated still will consider it a Japanese Bonsai even with a large rock and a mudman fishing from a boat and just may insult or outright attack you over the display. So its safer to just take a no Japanese approach when visiting Mexico.

Or, maybe not....

I would agree a lot of effort went into your response

I went to the Rivera Maya in June and stayed at the Palace Adventura Spa, went to Playa del Carmen, Tulum (Mayan ruins), and Cozumel. Had a blast, it is a very beautiful place, but no bonsai were seen. That's not saying that there aren't any, didn't really seek them out, I was on my honeymoon.

I have been to Mexico numerous times (I live about 1 hour drive away), have stayed in many places from Cozumel to Baja and in between, and have never seen a single bonsai tree. I am sure there are private individuals with collections, but I am not aware of any nurseries or gardens...

I did a quick Google search on "Bonsai Mexico" and it showed a few links, but nothing with too much content.

Here is a forum thread about an International Bonsai Convention they had on the Yucatan two years ago. Some nice looking material there!

I was a bit bored and placed Bonsai in Yucatan and this thread appear. I did not know to laugh or cry from the lack of information. Anyway Mexico has a long history with Japan, longer than most western countries, and the comments of edprocoat are really strange and without merit. Wonder where he got such strange information. Anyway with regard to Bonsai there are a few bonsai museums. I would recommend Tatsugoro as one of the best mexican bonsai museums with trees that have been worked for years by several artist like Mark Noleanders, Salvadore Liporache, Luciani, Nacho Marin, Pedro Morales etc. In Yucatan there is mainly one group that is located in Merida. If anyone would like to know more please do contact me. Enrique Castano my email is ecs7768@yahoo.com

I think edprocoat was just joking, but thanks for reaching out with some viable information.

I don't know where you would go to see them but I will tell you that it seems like the majority of the posts on the bonsai # I follow on instagram are in Spanish. It seems like it is very popular in central/south america.
