Bonsai in the Blue Ridge: An ABS Learning Seminars Event, Asheville, North Carolina, June 4-7, 2026

This is great news! Is registration through ABS or Blue Ridge Bonsai Society?

Registration will be hosted by ABS. When we’re ready, you will be able to access all of the information about the event at the link below (it’s still pointing at Rochester for now, but Asheville will be there soon).

Registration is opening on December 15th! Sign up early to reserve your spot as some of these workshops have limited attendance and will sell out early. If you’re looking to drop a hint for a Christmas gift, maybe print out copies of the flyer and leave them laying around the house!

Registration opens tomorrow! Watch for a “Registration is Live” announcement right here on BonsaiNut or on the American Bonsai Society Facebook or Instagram pages. Looking forward to seeing you all at this great event!

This is going to be a big event for Asheville and the BRBS so we’re looking forward to hosting a bunch of you folks here. The arboretum has an imposing collection of world class bonsai, and we’ve lined up a great selection of lecturers, workshops, vendors and a juried bonsai display. As Scott suggested head for the ABS website tomorrow to get a feel for just how much there will be see and do—coming June 4-7.

We need BonsaiNut name tags—I had no idea who markyscott was until this post came up and I was able to make the connection to Scott Barboza. With folks using pseudonyms it is difficult to know who is who. Maybe I’ll just make some up on my computer to hand out at registration if folks will provide that info. Given that registration may be limited to about 200 attendees and Bnutters would only be a fractipn of those, that wouldn’t be all that many names to keep track of.

BTW, that 41 page brochure on the website is downright overwhelming. I had no idea how big this event would be—amazing!

I bought a button-making machine last year for this very purpose. I was planning on making buttons for the Winter Show, but with the holidays, etc, it slipped my mind. But I hope to have my act together for next year!

Excellent, if folks buy them in advance they could be picked up at the show. Did you ever come up with a logo?

It’s been a crazy day. The response has been absolutely overwhelming - it took over a month after registration opened for Rochester to reach the numbers we’ve gotten for Asheville in a single day. From an organizers perspective, it’s a good problem to have. I’ve not seen any Learning Seminar workshop sell out on Day 1…. Until now. One is sold out and several more are close to full. I mention this to encourage my Bnut friends. If you plan on attending, please do not delay in registering on the assumption that this will be like other Learning Seminars. I can’t predict the future. Perhaps tomorrow, everything returns to a normal pace. But there are no guarantees - if there is a workshop you’d really like to attend, there is no time like the present to secure your spot.

I'd bet that a lot of people enjoyed the experience at Nationals and are eager for more
Asheville is also very centrally located. 12 hours of driving from Asheville gets you to Toronto (to the north) Miami (to the south) NYC to the NE, Chicago to the NW and New Orleans to the SW. Rochester is a 12 hour drive from Charlotte...

An important thing to consider when you sign up for some of the workshops. Those hinoki that Bjorn has for his are in 20 gallon containers, you’ll need to rent a van to get that bugger home, but that workshop sold out first. Same for JohnG’s BC flat top and forest workshops. So I expect a lot if not the majority of attendees will be driving in. Fortunately the Blue Ridge Parkway and interstate highways have been repaired as has most other infrastructure so no one need be concerned about hurricane damage. There’ll be lots to see and do here so hopefully folks will arrive early in the week and play tourist before the show starts.

Can anyone clarify this question for me? Is the registration for just going to see the trees? I know that there is registration for workshops, thats NOT what I am talking about. I saw on the ABS website that there are day registrations for 175 dollars. I dont care about workshops, I just want to see trees. Im not trying to be sour or anything, but I am a LOCAL to this area, I lost HALF OF EVERYTHING I OWNED to helene, I lost the job I had at the time, I didnt get a cent from FEMA or insurance. I havent even had the opportunity to recuperate anything that I have lost. Bonsai means almost as much to me as my own family, and I know most of yall dont care about my speil, but I am not sure if I have to register just to walk through and go to the vendors that are there. I will be very upset if this entire show is behind a ridiculous pay wall.

Hi Jesse. I totally understand and, having lived through a number of hurricanes and as a Red Cross volunteer who has staffed shelters in the aftermath of numerous disasters, I am very sympathetic and appreciative of your situation.

ABS has a dual mission of outreach and education. Making bonsai accessible is a big reason the exhibition is at the arboretum. If you do not register, you will still be able to access the following:

1) the vendor tent is freely accessible to all arboretum guests.
2) the exhibit tent is accessible to all arboretum guests for a $5 fee
3) there are a number of free demonstrations that will be open to the public. Look at the demo schedule in the brochure. Anything labeled “public demo” will be at the bonsai pavilion and open to the public.

Registration buys you a free parking pass to the arboretum, access to all the seminars, access to additional demonstrations, access to the banquet and awards ceremony, access to the opening reception, free access to the exhibition tent, and the opportunity to sign up for workshops.

Since you’re local and if you’d like to be more involved, there may be volunteer opportunities. If you’re interested, send me a direct message.

@markyscott I went ahead and registered so one more closer to maxing out on attendees. One question, I didn’t see anything about a form for submitting trees for the exhibition. How is that going to work? At our BRBS board meeting Saturday Dan said there would be an on online registration form but no details so just wondering?
