Ok ‘nutters let’s see ‘em. For many of you this is a common and perhaps prolonged usual event. Not so up here on the PNW (50’th).... 4”(10cm) so far and some predictions are for another 6”(15cm)....looks pretty but it was gently brushed off, to protect many hours of recent wiring😂.
First photo a Juniper Phoenix graft, the other 3 Mountain Hemlock.

Definetly a common, and prolonged event in Québec.😆 My rustics are completely buried, only to be seen in maybe March or April. Gotta love your coastal climate!

I look at the pictures above and wonder if some people are OVER-over-winterizing their trees? This is my first winter working on trees and I brought indoors one tree because I know that one doesn't do well below 30, a Luma apiculata. My other trees remained with the nursery pots or colander in the ground where their sides covered to the top of the rim with mulch. What I was not expecting was over 6" of snow in my backyard, since all we get is a little white dust every time they forecast snow here in San Antonio... so I hope they do survive.

I think I will build some sort of overhead frame when I get to build the benches, so I can provide cover if we get a forecast of snow again that ends up a mess just like this.

All of my trees have to be SOMEWHAT protected (Some much more than others)... my temps were sub-zero double-digits Degrees F. for like a week straight.

Blowing right past all those root kill temps... I actually believe I UNDERWINTERED... I uh.. also essentially sealed some really neat trees in an “icy tomb”..., the time it would take to fully excavate the “tomb”.. can’t be achieved, simply because it is too cold. ....we learn, and approach differently next season. I figure this is my first winter with actual trees... so it will be like Russian Roulette come spring. 🤣

Even if I wanted to bring trees in/change their location.. I couldn’t.. they have been.. um... fastened in place by snow and ice for at least a month. Once again, I shall plan differently next season.

Everyone’s “winter” will vary.

🤓
