Hello all! This is my first go at doing a bonsai tree related sculpture. It is a complete improvised piece. And is about done. I have some critiques but at the end of the day I am the type of person to move on to the next. I think I am going to do a cascade next. I just wish doing needles wasn’t so time consuming and difficult. Or I’d do a pine.

Here is another photo with background. I don’t know yet how I am going to finish it yet. I like the steel look but am thinking of doing a green solvent die for the moss. Also going to add some small plants to the bottom. Also did some dead wood. Melted it so hot that it started to break apart.
Wouldn’t it look good just rusting outside? Maybe put some green die only on the leaves with some white on the dead wood?

Great work. I really like what you’ve made.
Thank you! I checked out your website. The copper spoons are cool!
Ive done some tree pieces in the past. But after doing bonsai for four years it has greatly improved my style! And given me more motivation to do tree’s.

Absolutely stunning.
Almost afraid to ask, what would a piece like that sell for?

Thank you! I’d sell this one for $1200. The thing is I haven’t done a sculpture in over two years. So I am just getting started again.

Update with driftwood! I am going to incorporate driftwood on the next!View attachment 394566
Really quite nice and I'd definitely incorporate the DW into it, as you'd probably want to make that base more organic in form prior to the addition of the dead wood. I did a series of bonsai related bronze castings with "stained" glass back about 20++ yrs back and sold them in England. Very time consuming and expensive to cast yet a real delight to create. Here's a few old pix. I kept one of each for my kids...hah! (They sold at the time for 5K each.) My daughter at the time, 11 came up with the frog. It is the 'switch' on off. Let me know folks if anyone wants one, as I'll sell one or both!

I love that bark detail! Really cool pieces! Casting is a beast of it’s own. That is what I do currently for work. And the non ferrous softer metals patina really beautifully. I love steel. I wish it didn’t rust sometimes.

McGinnis,
Let it rust! Control the rust as Ferric Oxide can be a wonderful patina (including the different colors available in “blueing”(FeSO2) etc. some areas deeply can be nicely corroded others more of a light almost polished ….think abstractly in a more “Bizarro” (did ever read Superman comics?) type imagery

Here’s a piece with seeing in person Ai Wei Wei Chinese sculptor installation at Meijer Gardens MI. The piece is about 15’ or more in height!
