I really don't like messing with raffia. I've been told that you can use some type of tape that won't stick to the tree and would be just as good. Any success with this? What brand?

I have used a rubber tape by 3M from the electrical department at Lowes. It's not regular electrical tape as it isn't sticky.

I've seen Vet tape (used to wrap animal limbs) used in demonstrations.

Vet tape is what you are thinking about. You can find it at chain pet stores. However it is very expensive there. If you have a Tractor Supply handy go into the horse department and you will find 4" wide rolls of it there and not to very expensive. I buy the 4" wide rolls and then cut them on a bandsaw to +- 1" wide rolls. Wider for big stuff narrower for little stuff. Works quite well for me.
