Tom from PBS has a tree he does this with and I always thought I would like to try it. It is the old watch how the plant follows the sun kindergarten experiment.
This is a bougainvillea cascade in progress. It has been wired to drop some of the branches down. I hope this will bring all the growth upward so when the pot is turned right side up they will cascade downward. If that makes sense :).

I cleaned it up an filled the soil to the top of the rim.

I cut a piece of shade cloth I had and put it over the top secured with a cord.

Hot glued the seem.

Inverted the pot and put two wood spacers underneath. Secured it to the bench with cord.

My only concern is the leaves may burn because of not being used to getting direct sun.

Interesting idea. Do you just water through the drainage hole?

I think the leaves will eventually start to turn over to catch the sun. When you finally flip it back over, they will probably self-right, though.

I think you are right. Tom pretty much leaves his upside down until he wants to show it.
