This thing was such an overgrown mess. I took off a bit to try and remove some parts that were completely unnecessary for the final structure. Do another evaluation in the spring and see if I can get something going. Got a few years to attempt to turn it into something anyway!
Well, I thinned this guy out a bit. I left a fair amount I don’t anticipate using, but didn’t want to push it too far. Now looking back at the photos of it from Dec 2023, I’m shocked at how much bigger the buds were at that time, looking a bit like blue spruce buds. The buds now look more like those on a dwarf Alberta spruce than a blue spruce (though not nearly as numerous). I had hoped to do a some more fine tuning after the spring flush, but I’ll have to see how well it comes in. Some little creature also apparently was snacking on the buds last fall. I thought maybe it was ants, though I don’t know for sure. I am hopeful it’ll be able to shape it into something nice, but I not overly confident it’ll really be at that state in the timeline set for this contest. Looking forward to seeing how it looks in a few months!
