A house down the street is undergoing a complete gut with a landscape makeover. There are some massive 12" based stumps that they plan to rip up. I'm trying to get an ID on them. Am I on base thinking these are boxwoods? Not an ideal time to collect them, but if even one of the six or so survive then the effort will be worth it. Thanks!IMG_2272.jpgIMG_2273.jpg

They’re not boxwoods. The color is closer to berberis thunbergii, but I don’t see thorns, so it’s probably not that. Here’s a picture of Japanese Holly that I happen to have in my hand right now you can use to compare.

I think that's a Yaupon Holly, they get reddish purple new growth.

Ilex of some sort for sure, maybe vomitoria? The new growth on most of the native ones and cultivars is reddish color like yours. Its a clip and grow type tree, they just like to shoot straight. I hedge them down to where I want them height wise then start directional pruning when they reflush.
