I visited a local nursery today to have another look at a boxwood I had spotted last time I was there. Looked it over, but decided it wasn’t going to make a decent bonsai. I think it had been pruned once or twice with it being a topiary as the goal. There were too many branches at whorls, I walked away and wandered around looking at some other stuff. Then I noticed several boxwood that all had some nice looking bark, and were a good size. After rooting through them I found this one, and couldn’t resist. Brought it home and cleaned it up a little. Basically removing a few branches and some shoots that wouldn’t have been kept when it gets styled. I’ll let it be now, and will put it into a bonsai pot next spring.

Very unconventional first few inches which determines the design of rest of the tree. Before you touch it, draw what you think you want. Basically just stick drawings because you don't want to preclude it just because you are a lousy artist. The trunk has to evolve into minor branches which evolve into ramified twigs. Make drawings of a front, a side, and a plan view down through the top. If you can't draw something you like, take it back and exchange it for another.
