My BRT did the same thing several years ago. I narrowed it down to 2 things they happened 2 different years. The 1st year my girlfriend ran the AC when I was away at work ( it was weird winter it was below freezing for awhile then got days in the 70's) and tree was in airflow and 1 side of tree did similar thing but leaves got a little crispy. The other time was first winter after having my windows replaced from single pane to new double pane with low e coating I guess they blocked a beneficial ray of light tree needed because I started using grow light as supplemental light a couple hours a day ( tree is in front of southwest facing window when inside for winter) and it's been fine ever since. When researching for what could cause this issue some said root rot and or insufficient light.
