The shohin seminar is over and now I begin to think of two years from now. What can I do at the next one? This years trident maples went really good with many trees coming out looking pretty nice.

I think a nice broom elm will be nice. This will be my model tree. You know, to show what can be done with the material. all it needs is another year or so to get the tertiary branching really nice and a show pot.

Here is the material. These trees are about 5 inches tall and have 1/2 inch trunks. In two years these should be killer material to fashion a show ready tree from.

Come to Santa Nella in two years and take my workshop, you shouldn't be disappointed. Workshop will be fairly cheap too! Room for 8.

I have a tree or two that might be show ready in two years. How do you submit a tree for consideration fore showing?

Usually an email to Gordon Deeg will get the job done.

This is the elm in a pot. I will work on the twigs now while controlled growth can be done in this small pot.

Is the trunk of the tree orange? Seems like the photo reads that way, I've never seen one this color. I like the basic form you have going on, very nice.

It kind of looks orange, may be the lighting though. I have Catlin elms that in some pictures the trunk looks greenish in color, in person they are a grey-brown, when wet they look dark brown. Its usually when I use the flash they look green, but even in full sun you can not see a trace of green on them.

Smoke,

Is it possible to get a couple side photos of the tree? Also, who made the pot?

Thanks,
Evan

thats Chinese elm, I'd say these are a older than their size would suggest, probably been in those little pots a long time. Takes a good 10 years to get the exfoliatin' bark, (ants and aphids can give some age too, arrrgg)

It looks like the tree in post #6 started with 5 leaders. I have heard everything from 2-5. Is there a preferred number? Does it depend on the finished height?

I thought I would update this thread. It is about 8 elms started from root cuttings. Over the last couple weeks when I have time I have made four stands. They are Shohin stands. Black walnut and one is tall and one is short. 4 inches tall and 2 inches tall. I made two for me and two for a friend.

Nice elms and stands - but they don't feel broomy to me
