Buds all dead, trees still alive

I have two small Japanese maples that went through a cold snap unprotected, and now the buds on both appear pretty grey and dried out. Everything else has leafed out except these two.

The thing is, they both pass the scratch test. Green cambium.

Any suggestions to get ‘em going again? They’ve basically stalled out.

Thanks!

Just leave them alone, soil moist but not sodden, and keep your fingers crossed… Time will tell. If they don’t start pushing new leaves from latent buds by late spring, and the bark starts turning gray brown black, you’ll have your answer.
Got it. Thank you!
