I have a European Hornbeam in training and it is late summer approaching autumn in Virginia. Is it normal to have buds that look like they're swelling throughout the tree this time of year? Thanks for any pertinent info.

Just thinking out loud here.. what happens if you pick off all these plump buds in winter? Will they regrow weaker buds in spring?

Probably if the tree is very healthy and strong.
Wouldn't recommend it....
However, in early spring, before bud break, I usually do some trimming, which removes many of those buds that formed in the fall.
And the produce plenty of new growth.

I'm theorizing on Terminal Buds and Healthy wintering.

Especially as refers to my Hops horn beam specifically.

I read that flowers only come from PROPER TERMINAL BUDS.

So I got to observing these.

Proper terminal buds I feel are another very useful health gauge.

If PROPER terminal buds don't form, we know we cut back too late in the season.
And then have a greater winter dieback possibility.

Trees are greater sex fiends than humans, I feel removing their ability to reproduce removes their will to live.

That said, I'm not cutting anything in fall anymore.
Off anything.

Pruning, as the buds open.
