Well - I surprised myself on this one - I’m not sure why I haven’t started a thread on this tree. Here’s a California juniper I purchase from David Nguy in the summer of 2016. I really like bunjin trees, even if I find them pretty difficult to execute convincingly. I thought this was very nice material I might eventually build one around.

It was planted in pretty much pure black lava rock. His stuff is generally unsieved so it can stay pretty wet. I like to get it out of that stuff as soon as I can.

Roots are challenged growing in the unsieved lava medium. Appears to work fine for LA, but it can stay very wet for a long time in Houston.

1/2 bare root in progress.

I broke out the raffia and the #4 copper. Never used the #4 before.

Ya never know when you’re gonna need what ya need to have on hand!

Looks good! You did a great job cleaning the trunk and finding the lifeline! That will be a really nice tree.

Have a Shiner to celebrate!

Great work with this tree. I’m curious if you have any plans for the deadwood at the very top of the tree? Maybe it’s not even a consideration I’m just curious.

Hi M. I’ve reduced it some but plan on reducing it more. It’s too heavy for being that high on the tree.
