This isn’t the first time I post this tree but want to keep a progression on it now.

This was when I first got the tree, I immediately put a guy wire to bring the trunk forward and put a little more movement in. I believe it was in November.

Other than removing some branches on the first right branch a while back I didn’t really touch the tree until this week when I removed the wire that was digging in. It grew surprisingly well considering it's *cough cough* winter here so today I decided it was time to get in there and see what was going on in there. Defoliated and wired it..

Now, looking back at there pictures, I think I’ll go back and pull the branches down some, it feels a little flat maybe, I don’t know. Or maybe I’ll wait for it to fill back in and cut back the branches to bring the canopy in.. What do you all think?

Actually, I think the branches should be in-parallel to the ground. Is that what you're doing?

So after a bit of staring and moving things around I think I got it. The top section seemed like it lacked movement. The tree has good movement but in the pictures you lost some of it and I guess that is what was throwing me off. The top seemed almost straight and it most certainly isn't. I went back and tightened the guy wire bringing the apex more towards the viewer and of course it lowered it giving the whole tree a more balanced feel and a nicer flow. The tighter bend accentuates the curviness in the trunk and almost gets out of its own way now. The back of the back of the tree has this beautiful dead wood on it, I need to get this tree into a new pot with better soil and treat the wood to slow the rotting. I'm really happy with how this tree has been developing.

Cleaned up the dead wood at the base a bit, not sure how it’s going to work or look when the tree is in its new angle after I repot it, I guess we’ll see soon enough was thinking of going with a nanban style pot. Need to find something soon though.

I have one of her pots, she does really cool things with texture. @Leo in N E Illinois introduced me to her at the Midwest bonsai show a couple of years ago.

She really does great work, I saw it on her site and HAD to have it. And in person it looks even better. Super happy with it!

[1] There is a smaller, finer leaf available.

[2] Wood has no resistance to decay at any age.

[3 ] You need to work on your branch placements.

Would that be Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) ?

@Forsoothe! .

ovet 10 years ago, the folk in Florida, reported finding a smaller
leafed variety of the Conocarpus e.
Ask Mary Miller, see if she knows who has.

1. Maybe there is a smaller leaf tree available, I don’t know, but this thread isn’t about those trees. It’s about the buttonwood pictured.

2. Wood doesn’t have resistance, you’re right, but you can treat it to, as I said, slow down the rot.

3. Yes, you are correct. The main branches aren’t wired now because I left wire in a little too long and scarred the tree so I want it to recover from that a bit before wiring again.

Thanks.

Removed the big leaves and cut back some of the over grown shoots. I’m curious to see what happens with the thin branching that stayed.
