I was given some buttonwoods today. My boss saw my interest in the species and said he would give me a few.. I was thinking he was going to give me small trees to grow out, he gave me some pretty big trees, maybe about 10ft tall before he cut them back a bit and the trunks are about from 1"-3" but I cut those suckers down. The roots are a disaster from what I can see, they were in one gallon pots and were never repotted so they're tied up in a knot where the pot was and then they broke free and into the dirt. I don't know what to do about that but I guess I'll find out tomorrow or Sunday after I build some grow boxes. If you have any ideas, chime in, please. Anyhow, I chopped them back quite a bit and know they are just trunks. They may not be the best stock but I think they can be something. Time will tell, for now I just want them to live, some branches may be airlayered if they do. Not sure what to use for soil, the grow boxes will probably be 2'x1.5'x1', that's a lot of soil. These are my first big trees, or big for me, any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!
