Do you guys have a favorite place to buy things for mixing soil such as pumice, lava, akedama , etc. That is good price ?

Also tell me your favorite mix you use for deciduous trees .

Thanks

I mix mine from local outlets. Napa 8822 from Napa autoparts (verifying that it is in fact Diatomecious earth rather than clay), and then pumice and scoria from local landscape supply. I like to mix theses 1:1:1 by volume. It seems to work well for me and my needs. Your mileage can and will vary. There is alote written on the subject of soils and lot of arguements too, so experimenting is good.

If you haven't already, look under the resources tab for the site and read the article on inorganic components and the one on soil physics. Together they explain a lot about what is needed in a mix, and which components do what.

Failing that, do a search for Booone's mix and either buy a bag or build it youself. It is also a solid choice.

These are just my takes. One of thousands of opinions on the subject, and just as apt to change as I learn more over time.

As to where, I'm a big fan of supporting your local nursery if you have one.

If you're looking for the most economical way to buy, there is no cheaper alternative to buying in bulk. Find some friends in your local club to split a pallet and you'll find that the price of the soil components you're looking for come down to prices competitive with other off-touted alternatives. Here are some cost breakdowns I've posted before.

I think Wee Tree is out of business, but Bonsai Tonight is a good alternative.

Yes it is a bummer. I'd heard they were going through some management changes. Then for a while the website was up, but said they were closing. Now the site is gone completely and it's reported to be closed on Yelp.

But Jonas (https://store.bonsaitonight.com/) is a great alternative for after market bonsai soil suppliers to purchase in bulk. He sells Clay King, akadama and pumice. He ships by the pallet, his service is great and it's quite affordable when purchased in bulk. Some other pumice options include:

ACME Sand and Gravel in Tucson - http://www.acmesand.com/soil-amendments/horticultural-pumice/
Hess - http://www.hesspumice.com/pumice-pages/hess-pumice/about-hess-pumice.html
General Pumice Products - http://www.generalpumiceproducts.com/horticulture/

When I lived in Seattle I used to go to T. E. Walrath Trucking in South Tacoma. They carried bulk pumice. You set up an appointment, then show up with a shovel and a bucket!

For lava rock on the east coast I know of one supplier.
Beam Clay - http://www.beamclay.com/13 - Bonsai.pdf

Wow. Wee Tree was one of the places I used to order stock from...

Might be worth a call to them or to Garland Nursery to be sure. But their web presence is definitely gone. They still have a Facebook page, but no posts for a long time.

Edit - just saw your other thread.

I just posted a new thread about them in the Vendor Experiences Forum (to not completely derail this thread).

I forgot to set up an appointment but I'm going to find myself in Tacoma tomorrow and with some free time. I hope to get in and pick up some pumice.
I'm in desperate need of some soil and pumice seems to fit the bill.

Looks like they are closed for either Labor Day weekend or just weekend in general. I'm not getting through on the phone. Pumice will wait for another day. Or I'll get a small bit online to hold me over
