I'm going to be taking a trip to LA this month and would like to squeeze in some bonsai time, do any of the southern California locals have any recommendations for bonsai nursery or shows that are going to be happening on May 19-27.

2 must-visit places:

Fuji Bonsai Nursery
13170 Glenoaks Blvd
Sylmar, CA 91342

Chikugo-En Bonsai Nursery
18110 S Western Ave
Gardena, CA 90248

There are a few other places that are great as well, but these two seem to be the 2 best places, in my opinion. And Roy Nagatoshi at Fuji Bonsai does workshops on Saturdays for a few hours for a good price. I'd give him a call and find out what the schedule is for classes and try and visit one.

Hi, I think another place you might like to visit is House of Bonsai in Lakewood, Ca. The owners name is Vicky and her prices a very competitive. I dont know if she will ship to Hawaii, but even if she or Roy (Fuji Bonsai) don't ship it shoulndt be a problem. I've shipped numerous trees to Hawaii (eBay sales) and the trees have gotten to there destinantion just fine.

Thanks, House of Bonsai seems to be pretty close to the hotel that we are staying at. I've checked with the local department of ag and they said it would be fine to bring a tree back, as long as it does not have any organic soil. Bare rooted or planted in inorganic soil should be fine.

I went to LA a few years ago, and visited Chikugo-En. I would highly recommend it. The Ishiis are very nice people, and the trees they have are incredible. When I went, I think they did not take credit cards, so plan to bring some cash if you might end up buying something (I believe there was an ATM across the street).

I forgot to mention that another place you and the family will enjoy visiting is the Huntington Library in San Marino, CA (Pasadena area). You can always ask them if they want to go to a museum and surprise them with an awesome Japanese and Chinese garden.

Great pics and glad you had a good time. Did you take anything home from The House of Bonsai or Chikugo en?

The pines and juniper at chikugo en were amazing, unfortunately I think it is illegal to bring back pines, but I did pick up a small maple from house of bonsai, hopefully it does ok in the warmer weather.
