Really new to air layering I have access to a dawn redwood that's bottom is completely growing out of control. I was wondering if first it could be air layered. Second when is the best time and if there are any special steps that are different from a Maple layering. I live in Northern California where these trees are used regularly in landscaping and do very well.

Yes they can, probably spring or early summer would be the best time to start it. The technique should be the same.
