With all the extra time home, I’ve seen a few scrub trees about.
Figured I’d dig em out and see what happens. Good times!
I’m expecting to learn something at any rate.

It Would be cool to see your recently collected projects along with info about dig and aftercare.
Best of health to u and your trees!
I already posted this first one, but wanted it here.
CasAH told me I have a glossy buckthorn. I’ll keep an eye on this one 👁A928A3D8-FA65-4F2C-B5E1-F2BD5596AEE7.jpeg4B611985-F841-48BE-A887-8EC77F29AF25.jpeg

Then i found this thing. No idea what it is. Haha, pretty awful roots

At my mothers, she had this long forgotten nine bark. It was clear that this thing was getting crowded out by arborvitae and vines!

Yep. It looks like a cut back shrub. I’ll see what variety I have if it lives to leaf out!
Thanks! And let’s see what u dug!

My buckthorn has been a bit of a mystery.

Been alive 2 years, but the growth patterns are just weird. Unlike a crab apple (for example) which give buds all over the trunk when chopped, the buckthorn sends a bunch of sprouts out concentrated clusters. Lots off the base. Hard to get sprouts where you want them for branches. Growth comes out straight and stiff. Hard to imagine thread grafting. It does not respond "logically" to pruning for ramification. Seems to have its preferred times of year to grow at all.

All in all a big pain in the ass, but it has respectable nebari for a wild collected tree.

Heck, I may just graft a new kind of top onto it.

So the ninebarks leaves are turning purple.
I believe now that I have the Diablo Variety perhaps.

Some updates!

First off, i’d like to say that I wish I had named this thread, “ The good, the bad, the buckthorn.”
With some descent size examples in the back alley, I’ve grown to like these nasty bastards.
Some pics of chaotic branching.

Anyways, Here’s what my 2 ‘Back Alley’ buckthorn’s are looking like 6E64356F-F6F5-43D0-848B-69A823BAF843.jpegEF363E04-6F9E-4946-803B-89C57CD326D4.jpeg467225E7-30C3-4058-998B-760378A5BA87.jpeg
Not looking so good. I should have listened to @sorce about buckthorns not liking pond baskets. I slipped on another (as they have different hole patterns) to make it less “open”
My other one grew a lot better.

That may be old.

I noticed even wet, they wilt in hot sun. Surely an "understory" tree.

I think 8-6hours full sun is max.
