Can I Graft Japanese White Pine onto a Eastern White Pine?

Hi All,

Just curious, Can i do this? grafting Japanese White Pine(Pinus parviflora) onto an Eastern White pine(Pinus strobus)?


or is there a specific pine that i can graft Japanese White pine onto?

You can. But why would you want to? The purpose of grafting onto JBP is that JBP is so much more vigorous. This added energy helps the naturally slow growing JWP grow a little more rapidly.

I can't find any Japanese Black Pine in my area (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)...i got a good deal on some Eastern White Pine.

Eastern white pine, strobus, is much more winter hardy than Japanese black pine, Pinus thungergii, and may be better suited for colder climates.

This is true. The nursery trade used to sell JBP years ago here in Michigan but they all switched to the Austrian Black Pine because the JBP was marginal here and the failure rate was so high.

I didn't see that you were in Canada. Yes, a cold hardy root stock would be a good choice. I've heard that Scots pine stock is used sometimes as it is a cold weather tree.

Thank you all for the information, I saw a video of a bonsai person using the t-grafting style to graft japanese white pine onto eastern white pine.

Are you wanting to graft a specific cultivar? Because JWP may be cold hardy enough on it's own roots... I'm not entirely sure about canada though...
