Can Terra Cotta pots be stained?

Picked up some terra cotta pots that are about 11" rounds and about 4.5" inches deep. I love the shape of the pots but the terra cotta look is not my favorite. Can they be stained, glazed or "painted" to a much darker brown/red? Latex paint is not an option so I use the term "painted" to imply a creative dilution of some product to maintain some opacity but darken the terra cotta pot. Any ideas?

I've seen them painted, but it made them look like a child's art project. I assume they would stain. The clay is quite porous.

Im sure some cement stain would work.
