Can you give me that stand please?

Surprised I missed this statement. It appears that the species (in and of themselves) are not outright banned via the Lacey Act, rather the Lacey Act specifically limits importation, possession etc, IF the wood was illegally taken in the first place. So ebony may not be illegal, as long as the harvesting was legal. But if the harvesting was illegal, the Lacey Act allows seizure, even if the wood species would otherwise be allowed. Kinda like the wood version of blood diamonds.

'Course if you are using illegal wood, you are doomed unless you can show initial possession predates restrictions (like elephant ivory, for example).

Yeah, ask Gibson Guitars which was raided by eco nazis in the federal government.

Seven of my favorite scroll dealers in Japan supended selling from Jan. 2012 until last month. They are finally getting back up to speed. A couple (by email) notified me that scrolls had been confiscated by customs due to elephant ivory restriction laws in this country. Since the discription on ebay contained the words "Scroll ends- tusks of elephants" the goods were siezed.

Now on ebay the scrolls contain the words "scroll ends- cattle bone".

Interesting sidestep I think. Big Brother is watching.....

Ivory they are very touchy about. Carved ivory tusks in particular - you have to prove they predate protection or they will seize them. For a while they were making scrimshaw out of elephant ivory (after embargo on whale harvests) and now elephant ivory is embargoed. Cattle bone, deer bone, mammoth ivory (which I find hard to believe is apparently more available than elephant ivory), and tagua nut are often used... I saw some amazing netsuke made out of tagua nut.
