Can You Trunk Chop a Larch (Larix Laricina)

Can anyone tell me if you can trunk chop a larch below the first branch? and if so when?

The more the better, it will recover a lot faster

Will it bud from the trunk or am I reliant on an existing shoot for the new top?

Leave an exsisting shoot for the new top. You will rarely get buds to pop on the trunk. It can happen but is not as reliable as leaving a shoot for the new leader. And that also will give you a jump start on the trunkline taper. Other wise it could rake a long time growing out a new leader to match up to the lower portion
