Went to the valley Friday to pick-up our daughter from spring break vacation (she stayed with her grand parents)...came back tonight so I can join a dig tomorrow (all 4 are B-Nuts as of last count). After a five hour drive (one way), we arrived around 10:30...tinkered with my plants until midnight to relax...then checked online (B-Nut of course) because I cannot sleep yet.

It will be tough waking up early tomorrow. LOL I hope the pyracantha I am taking is worth it. The 15-20 dwarf yaupon holly looks very promising but I am not too interested. Maybe it will change tomorrow. :D

Oh, I almost forgot...I also brought back 4 trees back today, on top of the 2 I got last weekend from the same nursery plus the 2 Itoigawa. Scratching my head wondering where to put them.

Sigh.

Dario, why don't you ask your wife? I am sure she could tell you where to put them. :p

Ed,

She is my enabler...even encouraged me to go back to the nursery today. I was also only going to buy one Itoigawa because they are a bit pricey...but she told me to get more. I am the one who elected to only get two!

Off I go to the dig site, hope I'll get something worth sharing a pic of later. :o

sounds like you need to move to a place with larger yard, or rent some of your neighbors yard....... ;)

Room for one more...

Time to cull Dario ;) Btw, just a warning, I repotted my pyracantha a few days ago, worked with the wood only a little, and was amazed how hard the hardwood is! It's like a yew. Btw, nice pickup on the itoigawas! and good luck with the dig today ;)

Finished at noon and had a great time. There were 6 of us but one is a boy helping his mom (so technically just 5). We only took 2-4 trees each.

Turned out there were 4 pyracantha and I took 2. Another friend took one but it was so difficult all 6 of us teamed up on it. All are in the property line and portion of each them are on the other side of the fence...I had to dig under the tree and fence to cut roots going the other way. It was hard!!!

Here are some pics...

Thanks. :)

Both my collected trees have natural deadwood...that is why I zeroed in on these. The other 2 also have but we have to leave the other one because half of the tree is on the other side.

The owner (newly purchased the home couple of years ago) call these devil plants because of the thorns. LOL

Nice stump I would remove the right straight trunk on that stump then it'll be an awesome tree.

Special thanks to Dario. Here is the 2 I dug. I have to remove alot of trunks and branches but here they are half potted. Note that my daughters 4 and 6 insisted on decorating the new "home" of a grow box.
The large one is a Ligustrum and the smaller one is a Dwarf Youpon.

Nice to finally meet you. We should do this again...but we might need a new digging bar! LOL.

The decorated box is nice. I think they are indirectly telling you that you took too long. LOL Should give you a smile every time you visit your tree. :)

If the yaupon is mine, I will shorten the straight branches down to 3" or so...same principle applies as the cedar elm we were discussing.

Which one, pyracantha #1? I actually chopped that half way down. Left some for possible carving later.

Thanks.

All but one of those trunks on the youpon is going away and I will eventually carve the base. Most of the trunks are unusable so they have to go!

Ok. Just watch the branches on the one you will keep then. Also clear the branches around it so they won't compete with the ones you care about for light. I usually remove all that I do not need actually...focus the growth where I need it. Maybe keep a backup or 2 at the most.

Remember to spray fungicide as prophylactic! You do not want fungus to take hold esp at the roots. Good luck! :)

On mine, I chopped both pyracantha lower than the posted pics after. I want to do it ASAP then let it be for a while.

A few more sample pics of the yaupon hollies collected. The middle one is the smallest and came of the ground in less than a minute.

If the trees are still there this weekend...I just might go back and get 1 or 2 yaupon. It is a shame to let these beauties go to the landfill.

I'd love to get two small ones but not likely to drive there. Nice find(s) :D

Just got permission to use this photo.

Who says you cannot play and work at the same time?

Here is Steve "flanking" on a (not visible) digging bar...trying to lift a pyracantha that refuses to budge. One of my favorite photos of the dig. LOL
