If you have ever seen those 'Bonsai work stands' you know they cost $300-$500.
Id rather spend that money on trees or other things so I came up with a less costly solution.

This cost me about $100 and 2-3 hours of my time. I wanted something that I could adjust the height of so I could work on a tree from different angles if necessary. I made it out of a medical stool I purchased off of Amazon for about $70. If you already have an old office chair you can use, you can save even more.

Here is the medical stool as purchased:

I took the seat off of its bracket and made a wood shelf out of 2 18 inch 1x10s side by side attached by 1x3 pieces .

Top of the shelf (make sure to counter sink the tops of the bolts as I did here)

...Great idea. Thank you for posting! I think I may keep an eye out on Craigslist for one to convert!

Cool. It looks like the stool has a pneumatic cylinder to adjust height - is it difficult to operate without the weight of a person on it? Do you have to remove the tree and sit on it to get it to go back down?
My final (and favorite) question is, if you release the lift mechanism without much weight on it, is it capable of flinging a tree up in the air?

Complete with built-in foot rest!

Nice!

@ Colin: Used it for the first time today. You do need to put a little weight on it to get it to go up and down but you dont have to sit on it.

@sorce: The foot rest isnt for my feet, I use it to tie down the shelf with bungee cords to keep it from rotating when I want it not to rotate.
All in all, I think it works pretty well for what it is.

I have been looking for a stool like this to do the exact same thing!
