While on one of my many scouting trips, I found a BIG 4 and 1/2" diameter cherry laurel that has been chopped by roadside mowers more than once. The heavily splintered trunk is less than a foot tall and has several pinky sized branches growing out of it. Bonsai potential information is kind of scarce. Has anyone had experience with this species. The leaves look like they have reduced on this specimen compared to the full sized ones around it. Is it worth digging?

If it is a volunteer in Louisiana, it almost certainly Prunus caroliniana. Sorry, I don't know anything about suitability for bonsai. But you shouild try!

I'll definitely try it. I'll also try a camphor tree or two. The 1.5 mile stretch of country road near me has some world class camphor trees......if there IS such a thing. :D Oaks too. I could fill half a pickup bed with thumb sized oaks mowed down to less than 18" tall for 2-5 years .
