I found a Chinese elm dug it up this fall put it in a grow box, it has a 3/4” trunk got quite a few fine roots, 3’ tall, leafs died back almost immediately. I currently have it in an unheated greenhouse, I did a scratch test and trunk is still green under bark, what is my best option with this tree , leave it in greenhouse and see it it leaf’s out in the spring or cut trunk 3-4” above ground and bring it inside to the warmth and see if it will start to produce branching or even start to grow would this give me a head start on next year? Any advice would be great thanks.

The best time to collect any tree is early spring, but an unheated greenhouse should help to mitigate any problems from a fall collection. I don’t keep any elms myself, but it’s my understanding that it’s normal for Chinese elms to drop leaves in the fall in cold climates. Keep the tree protected from frost, and cross your fingers it wakes up this spring. Keep the soil moist but not damp.
