Hi, my chinese elm leaves have started to have black spots and a generally black appearance as if covered with grime(pics attached). Now I am also seeing some branches turn black. Any advice on what this could be and how to treat. Any help is much appreciated

Looks a bit like aphid "sap". Is it kept under another full-sized tree?

Thanks for your response. No large trees overhead. They are in a patio with a ceiling overhead
They shouldn't be covered with a roof - they need to be in full sunlight - also where they can get rained on to clean the leaves...

Might be some type of fungus, I have seen something similar on my cork oaks and when I sprayed it with a fungicide, it solved the problem. Good luck!

I agree with Jeremy on the aphids. I circled in your photo what looks like the shed exoskeleton on an aphid. As stated, look above the leaves for the source of the honeydew that is growing the black sooty mold. The mold isn’t feeding on the leaf, just the excretion of the aphids. But it looks poor and blocks sunlight. Once you kill the aphids, you can just spray off the mold with water.

Also, some of the new leaves have a mottled paler color might be early sign of chlorosis and a nutrient deficient. But the older leaves are nice a green. Good Luck!
