A couple years back my neighbor mowed over my Chinese elm. Based on Nutters’ recommendation, I stuck 2 roots in a pot. With the hurricanes and all I promptly ignored them. Fast forward to this morning.

Planted in NAPA 8822. The roots were plentiful. Long roots circling the bottom from 2 years of abandon.

Original root on this one was way too long. I took root cutting off the base and screwed it on a plywood disc.

The other tree also had very long roots.

Took another root cutting and putting it on another base.

Top of one tree was trimmed put in a tall pot with lots of lava rock for the roots to grow around.

I also took a couple cuttings that have interesting shapes.

Started out with 2 in a pot and wound up with 6. All were soaked in a mild root hormone solution. Now the waiting game begins.

The ones from the roots are growing so well. I can’t wait to see them next year at repot.

The root cuttings are growing so fast. I have potential reverse taper right at the cuts. Wait til spring or do the branch selection now since I am in the second growing season?087837DB-B7B6-4CB5-A980-BB701AC5EED7.jpeg

Roots started to poke out at the bottom so the pot bottom was cut and the tree put in a pond basket. As the roots grow into the basket, the top pot will be slowly cut away to expose the roots for a Negari elm.
