Last year i ordered some Japanese red pine and Japanese black pine seeds and decided to order some Chinese red pine seeds also since they were only $1 for a pack of 25. I planted them last year in old strawberry containers with just sifted fines from my bonsai soil and fertilized maybe twice kinda forgetting about them. They grew well all season and I left them out all winter with no protection. The candles have been extending nicely so I decided to repot and see what I can make of them since they're so hardy.

I root pruned one seedling and just potted the others up cuz their root systems were pretty good and the white root tips were already growing

These are looking great so far. Thanks for sharing!

I have ~30-40 Japanese Black Pine seeds currently in the stratification process with about 2 weeks left.

I'm excited for the day they reach where yours are now and beyond!

Yes, I'm aware. However, in your post you also mentioned purchasing some JBP seeds as well.

In general, I'm excited to go through the same process you currently are with your red pine. Congrats!

Oh yeah only 2 of my Japanese black pine survived the winter and they're growing strong. Pics posted on my jbp contest thread. Always a fun process starting from seed

Hi all.

Anyone have success with growing these from seed?

I got my hand on a bunch of them from a colleague in China - they're in the fridge now for a few weeks.

Any update on this?

Yes! I had about 100 seeds or so and about 70% germinated. I have 61 (squirrels ate a few :() of these now growing in root maker pots.

They are to make niwaki-ish garden trees eventually. The original inspiration came from this hotel in Shanghai, China. I inquired with their landscape architect and they confirmed the trees were p. tabuliformis collected from the wild.
