Has anyone tried developing chojubai in the ground?

I've only talked to one person about this, Brent at Evergreengardenworks in northern california. He said they don't do well where he is in the ground, possibly because of the spring frosts. Brent says other more vigorous Chaenomeles don't have a problem with being grown in a field.

Here in Los Angeles it never hard frosts, but we do have excessive heat in the summer. I read that Chaenomeles like cool roots, and having them in the ground should help this to some degree, right?

But I'm wondering if anyone has applicable experience growing Chojubai in the ground where it is hot (100º+ days in the summer)

Thanks!

You may also want to ask about preferred PH for them. Both soil and water in SoCal are very alkaline.
