chopping a gardenia

Hopefully,this is the right place to post this question. Can a gardenia ?? be chopped down to stumps,for training as a shohin. Do they backbud and grow back the same as other flowering plants?. I am in zone 9. Thanks to all for any information.

Gardenias here are often grafted so pay attention not to chop below the graft

A pic of the tree might help too maybe air layer is a better option?

Yes, you can cut them back pretty hard since they’re hardy in your area.

thanks to all. I have researched different bonsai sites. Sometimes, it is very confusing, when they say hard prune ok. However, I try to ask bonsai nut members who have more experience. Thanks again.

The more different places you research, the more bad information you likely stumble on. It’s amazing how much bad info is out there. Find someone who has trees you admire and do what he/she does.
