Yeah I think the odds are in my favor with a bit of roots already grown for the horizontal position. The tree was healthy with decent energy reserve. I expect it to bud every where along the trunk just like all others.

The answer: they first bud out on the sides where there is soil to keep them moist. That happens with this and also the cutting that was laid horizontally. Eventually there are buds on the top.

It has been 1.5 years. The tree only grew two shoots with nothing at the base. I am thinking about cutting the trunk in half and pot the growing end.
