I posted this little shrub a while back in my Southwest Natives thread. It seems to be doing well and I gave it a little haircut to see if I get any back budding. I can't find any pics of people using this species but It seems to have some real promise.

1) Very little (1/4" or less) 3-5 lobed leaves
2) Rough bark. (looks rather like an old rosemary)
3) Twisting twiggy branches
4) Seems to respond well to major root reduction
5) Supposed to flower, I have not seen it.

Anyway, here are some pics. There are several options to pursue depending on how and if it back buds. We will see.

Love the leaves on these and looks like it back buds really well. :)

One thing I will do is revisit the chops and reduce some of the longer branches further ASAP. There are really straight branches that are not too appealing that you will most likely regret keeping later (unless you can wire or bend them). Rebuild it properly now especially since you chopped hard anyway. I'll probably keep 2-3 buds at each branch...specially the main ones.

Probably like this...
