Hello everyone.
What causes leaves to remain semi closed.
I have a Korean hornbeam with all of it's leaves semi closed. Right next to this tree is another Korean hornbeam with the leaves open.
The tree with the closed Leaves has been this way since spring. I really haven't paid it too much attention and this is why I'm inquiring about it now.
It has been fed with all my other trees and it's watered as needed.
Steve

I was supposed to have repotted it this spring but I didn't do it.
Also forgot to mention that there's no new growth this year so far.
I'm going to slip it to a bigger pot tonight when I get home from work.

They have a slight curl to them, but they don't look especially bad to me. Is this a new tree to you this year?

Best hold off on that I reckon.

This is nothing as bad as I thought it might be.

Is that growth not from this year?

I have a similar situation with little growth due to soil falling out the sides of Colanders and causing air pockets.

Your soil looks good.
Maybe just pokey poke a chopstick in and see if you can get the soil to settle in a little, iffin there was a hole left at last repot, or if you got a burrowing critter which, Has happened!;)

But that's just hip shootin'.

No. I had this tree for 3 years.
I repotted it 2 years ago and was supposed to do it this year, but didn't.
My other Korean hornbeam has it's leaves wide open.

The only growth from this year are the leaves that popped out in spring.
No new branches or extensions though.

Make sure you don't have any insect or root issues, maybe it's root bound, and the feeder roots on the wall of the pot are getting too hot. Perhaps put it into more shade in the hot part of the day.

When looking for pests it is often helpful to hold a white piece of paper under the branches and then shake the branch. Carefully look at the paper for anything that moves and if there are dark spots rub your finger over them - if insects you will see a liquid (internals) trail. You should also buy a magnifying glass like us old folks use. One with a light is always better. Help see those very little critters. Another way is to use a camera with a macro lens.

Aren't critters just great fun?

Less sun... Hard to explain why but I have kept trees potted for several years and although all "seems the same" some plants just disagree. I have had more then one of those and it looks like heat stress to me, nothing more.

I'll try the shade.
It definitely doesn't have insects.

OK, well as long as the leaves are green and no other signs of problems, then it's probably just sulking from some root issue. Mine have done this for a season with no lasting issues. Just keep a good eye on it from here to dormancy and do a good SAFE repot. Maybe give it a little bit more room in a pot than you normally would.
