Can you chop these below the lowest branch or will that kill them?

Sorry, I've lost track. By "these" do you mean coastal redwood or dawn redwood. If coastal redwood, yes you can chop down to the ground if you want, and get regrowth.

Here in UK Ive seen Sequoia sempervirens -AKA Coast redwood grown in forestry plantations that sprouted profusely from the stump after felling so yes! Im told they are one of the few conifers that will do this.

Apologies yes I did mean coast redwoods. Thanks for the answers, I'm pleased as I have one with a horrible bulge below the first branch which I now know I chop below. 👍
