While on our property this weekend, I got this, not much to the trunk but did get a fair amount of roots. Couple years ago RockM told me Beech do not like drastic root cut back when collecting, the one he told me about died. So I hope this will have a better chance. I had about 2 hours of day left and stated to dig up this Hawthorn ,,,,

then I noticed it already had small leaf bloomed out, so I figured wait till next year.
Looking close to the road as daylight was closing and after the walk up the hill with tree, shovel and backpack (see looking for hornbeam) I did not want to go back down to the bottom.
I spotted this,

I collected a beech last year and cut every single root off, dusted it, potted it in a flat with straight pumice, and it recovered nicely.

I will post pics as soon as it wakes up this Spring.

That being said, that's a great looking tree!!!

I noticed today they are getting bigger, maybe it will make it.
Once you start seeing some greenish color amidst the brown, it means the tree will be coming out soon. It'll be a while before it roots, I've found beech to be relatively slow to do so. Don't plan on any work this year, just let it grow out.
