My last opportunity to collect in the area I was in was yesterday so I got after it. All three of these had a nice base of fine roots which I was able to keep in tact upon collection.

All potted up in a mix of 1:1:1 - perlite, turface, pine bark.

Started to diligently use a chopstick to ensure no air pockets are left when potting up as well. Definitely different than slip potting a tree.

3rd one is a balsam

Hey there geek,
The last hemlock is actually an abies (true fir - balsam), either amabalis or lasiocarpa (sub-alpine fir) which might depend on the elevation or microclimate where you collected them. You (Washington State) also have noble fir but they are east of you I believe.
Up here (Canada EH!) we use a high percentage of SeaSoil in our mixes for our hemi's and they just love it. Goggle it as you might be able to get it where you are.
Cheers g.
