Collected this guy from a brushy area behind my business. Very silty river bank area so it came out easy. Lots of feeder roots left on it... so I’m hopeful! Honeysuckle is an interesting one... I like this trunk a lot. Probably going to cut everything back eventually, to just the main trunk, and I’ll cut that trunk shorter. I wanted to leave space for die back.

We’ll see what happens!

I love honeysuckles, small leafs, flowers, nice bark and they are pretty tough.

I don't think you will have any dieback

Good luck with it

Here are some more pictures. Still thinking about cutting back the main leader to a lower node, just because I don’t like how arrow-straight it is after that bend. When I eventually repot a couple years down the line I’ll probably change the angle up a little, too.

In the picture with the drawing, the red slashes show possible cut-back spots, the green show where there are buds that already started popping before I collected the tree.

I really just collected it for the lower part of the trunk; I liked the scar and the twist in it. The root base is nice, but it’s still hidden under the soil until I see some recovery.

Would you say to the upper or lower red line? I want to go above the bend, because I like the way the trunk looks up to there. But after that I have no attachment to anything.
Lower red line. You'll be chopping a couple of trunk diameters from the bend, and that should help you build taper just right.

Cut back to about about 1/4” above a node. Hopefully that’ll sprout in the coming weeks.

It's nearly impossible to kill a honeysuckle. This is one I dug up this spring.7K4NvVpKT2+uSwNba4sxqw.jpg7K4NvVpKT2+uSwNba4sxqw.jpgjdY3jSlnTTq6L2phMY7B0A.jpg

Update on this: strong budding all over the damn thing. People weren’t kidding when they said they’re hardy and robust growers. I’ve just let it grow so far with the exception of pinching off buds that sprouted straight out of the soil, and from the little collar area circled in red on one of the photos. Lots of buds were sprouting from there, but I didn’t want it to thicken anymore because it already has created a tiny bit of reverse taper right there that I’ll likely have to work with to fix eventually... otherwise, I’ve let all the buds grow out unhindered. Plan on letting that continue for the year. I might prune back at some point later in the summer, but more likely I’ll just let it go until next year.
