I dug this knobby softball sized oak because I really liked the texture of the bark and the shape. I thought about letting a single trunk grow and making a shohin sized tree. I also could let a few branches grow into a clump style. Are let one to three trunks develop off this one bulbous soft ball sized trunk. I would like to hear from others about what they would do with it, the good or the bad.

Definitely a cool trunk! I've never seen an oak like that here in FL. I like your shohin idea, it might be more difficult to show off that texture as a clump.

Very nice find! It is incredibly rare to simply find one like that! I would say once potted, give it a year or two to regain vigor, then develop into a Sumo Shohin. Clump style is a possibility, but would take some time. Good luck!

Thank you for the input

I planted it back in the ground because I don't have anything big enough to pot it in. I could make one up from wood. This root ball is over a foot around. I have heard you should defoliate an oak when you collect it.This one has so much root and very little on top to support ,I think it will not have any problems. I also got four smaller ones from the same area. Thanks for the suggestions

Excellent find!

See if it will fit soda or milk crates. I just line those with landscaping fabric and voila! Instant training pot. I also use a lot of dish pan (from Walmart) and for larger, I use bussing tub (used by bus boys in restaurants- from restaurant supply stores).

Good luck!!!
