Collected these Pitch Pines in the spring up on a private property in poconos. Forgot to post earlier. These were the best I could find there on my buddy’s property , they were on rocks on a cliff. The small one seems to be recovering ok, but the bigger one not too sure about although it has some new growth pushing up top and base.

Reviving this thread but with another collected Pitch Pine from NY state it was collected 4 years ago. It’s going to be decandled soon, start a separate thread at that time .. this is new number 2 cause the one recently collected is new number 1. First picture is the front .. can’t see it yet.1489A9B6-0CB8-43C3-94B3-4679EC9AFBA1.jpeg5DDBAB9B-6856-4778-8DB7-57EC52E4DF69.jpeg

Vastly more interesting trunk;).
Thanks ! I love Pitch Pine, second favorite is Ponderosa. Love natives… I’m collecting Ponderosa this fall in Colorado. This tree is going to be styled in a dynamic way and sorta like how Japanese Red pines are styled but with a Pitch Pine specific twist.

Shogun - Very nice find! I remember we were discussed looking for material last year. How are those trees doing now?

So June 6th , I decandled this specimen, new buds popped all over. I will let these grow out , not sure if I’ll even need to shoot select. I wanna wire late august / early September to make sure I can safely keep this outside F411B90D-0BD7-4259-A515-29B911ABB5A4.jpeg1A3253C6-74F2-4F88-B906-94DB49E68C8A.jpeg277613B4-4FA6-486F-9C2A-72AF714AA77C.jpegD3731E6D-8719-45A4-85C6-C3C2411C0B4C.jpeg8B06DC82-AE76-42D2-AA7A-DE1168661306.jpeg

Interesting technique. Did you pump it up with fertilizer over the past growing season?

Yes just like with Japanese Red or Black.. up to the decandling it was ramped up with fertilizer since spring. It’s a double flush pine. And then when my shortleaf is more developed I’ll do the same

Double flush pushing more … I’m going to wire in fall but just to set the primary branches and secondary to set up the scaffolding. I love this pine it has a lot of meaning to me, it was the first native oitch pine I ever worked on 2 years ago by just weeding it and watering. Now 2 years later I was able to take it home with me , I’m so happy that I took the chance to work at the studio, it’s allowed me to grown not just in Bonsai but also life.. I think everyone needs a side gig outside of a normal career.CB8FD76C-DEF8-4B58-8F13-C5C0FCAF1A6D.jpeg142CF242-2139-4D6D-BB11-D1414775E224.jpeg

Still pushing its buds, did not cut them and didn’t wire as tightly around them. Will fill in more but I’m pleased w the structural design to take it further.
styled today over lunch working from home .. ahhhh it’s a beautiful thing.

Is eye poking branch coming forward intended to view from different front then presently shown? Would 180 degree reversal of tree be possible🤔?

Is pitch pine the pine that back buds on the trunk, that I see in the pine barrens of NJ? Nice material, and I like the first two as well.

Buds are moving so today I Repotted into a great @NaoTK pot , I had this or a round one in mind but there was a vital juncture that could just not be safely cut back .. not alot of roots surprisingly it wasn’t in the greatest soil mix , I just cut the outter roots off.pretty much Adjusted the angle and used pumice base and akadama pumice mix , this pot will allow for healthy root growth and growth for areas in still developing for this collected tree. Top dressed with moss ground up sphagnum and died with sumi

This trees buds are starting to swell all over with new green advantageous buds popping .. it lost some old needles near new apex but I’m not worried because I’m just gonna let this tree regain energy this year and do now candle work at all. The branch lower poking out will eventually be cut back once more back budding or that branch behind it develops more
