Dear bonsai lovers, today I was with a customer. we were talking about the work I had to do. after that conversation I asked if I could still see the garden. it lay nicely in a valley. On the stairs down I saw a pine. it was placed in a masonry tray in the stairs. he told me everything would be demolished. I didn't say that den? it had to go out and it would go into the container. I said I would like to have it. he found that no problem. only I had to take him immediately. in the photos you can see the stairs. I was able to take the tree with its whole root. advice about the root ball. how much can I take off? and anyone have an idea what kind of wp it is? I'll take some better pictures tomorrow. this tree was in this place for at least 30 years.

regards Jurrie

Please add location to profile. May also help ID tree(maybe)😁. Suggest is wrong season for root work. Could remove stray or broken roots, remove weeds, ground cover from soil to help with watering but pot up in free draining non organic substrate, keep in full sun and do not over or under water. Looks like good branching down low and could become good tree in time;).

Considering your location diagnosis as P. strobus dubious at best. GREAT bark down low, also some good low branching. Considering if were MY tree and with boring straightness of trunk and once established and healthy maybe next Spring would cut off above 2nd whorl of branches and Work from there. Either that OR cut back root ball next Spring but not both. Key thing is that tree must be in robust good health not just alive before doing this work;). Amount of tree kept is your decision not mine as is your tree.

It's probably Pinus Cembra; Stone Pine. That's what happens when these posters do not provide a location.

As far as know, Pinus Cembra is not local! I have one, but that was collected in the Alps, on high altitude
I would suspect it was a nursery tree planted in the planter years ago. But, hey, I don’t live in the Netherlands. I have no idea what’s available there.
