Can't wait until I can post some of mine but it is still too dang cold around here. Probably a month away!

@atlasarsenal, I collected a very similar hornbeam last year to the beast, see this thread. In fact that is the name I gave to mine as well.

Here is an updated photo of the tree after a year of growing unrestrained. The tree didn't skip a beat. Mine is 5-6 inches at the base but I wish I would have taken the roots back more like you did. Leaving them on allowed for explosive growth as you see below but the pot is too heavy and awkward for me to easily move.

On to something a little more fun and promising. Another American Hornbeam, I think this will be pretty nice tree in several years.

I marked all of these trees last fall and I did not have this one marked. I usually don’t care much for multi trunk trees but they are kind of growing on me. This one was right beside another one I did have marked and I just couldn’t leave it.🤩

Not too much new this year 😉..

3 trunk hawthorn. A little Ash that was growing in basically rock and water. And a large larch. We'll see if the larch pulls through, as the bigger they are, the higher the fail rate.

This is a hop-hornbeam that I field chopped last year about this time when I was collecting.

Here it is about midsummer.

I dug it last weekend and finally got it potted up this morning. I dug a half a dozen hop-hornbeam last year and only one that survived. Last year I bare rooted all of them. This year I am leaving most of the field soil intact and filling in with bonsai soil around them. A friend of mine has had success using this method.

And another smaller one.

And the entire collection for this year. I still have one more little sugar maple to pot but I won’t bore y’all with a stick. I have a little hip hawthorn to dig this weekend and that will be it for this year. It’s fun stuff but I’m glad it’s done for this year, my back is feeling it! I’m still going to have to shuffle these in & out a couple of times.

Finally went back and got the large oak out. It’s probably the largest tree I’ve collected to date. Looking forward to seeing it bud out this spring Ana hopefully make its way into a bonsai container some day. I better start saving up for it now because I’m sure it’s going to cost a pretty penny haha.

An Ulmus Americana I chopped about 10 years ago and forgot about. I wish I had moved it years ago. I don't know if this one will survive, but it was free. I did some carving and will let nature take over for now. It is almost 5 ft tall and I'm not sure where it is heading.

A massive euonymus allatus. This thing was 15+ tall. Currently sitting about 6ft tall. We'll wait and see what happens

Went to dig a couple of the Hawthorn I had marked last year and after starting to follow the trunk down soon realised neither would be very good - super one sided root growth on one and the other had a huge second trunk buried 6 inches down which I hadn't known was there before. Presumably the trunk died years ago and slowly got buried! Decided it would have been more of a problem than a feature to try and work with it.

I was resolved to dig something so went to another Hawthorn I had seen a while earlier. After the huge one I dug last year I decided to invest in some heating cables for my greenhouse, and then wrapped the whole thing in a black bag and hopefully this 'sweating' technique will pay off this time round.
The green trug has 4 little deer-nibbled oaks I pulled a couple months ago with an aim for an eventual group planting if they survive, very poor roots on them but we'll see what happens to them.

The big trunk in the 3rd picture is another Hawthorn which I forgot to picture somehow while I was potting them up.
The last one is a Prunus Nigra I had ground grown from quite a small cheap shrub I bought at a garden centre and it fattened up loads quite fast.
