New buds are always encouraging. Are you planning to leave them outside for the winter? I don't know how hardy fresh growth is in our winters.

I picked my neighbor's brain on lantana care. She normally cuts them way back in winter and they come back very well in spring. I didn't ask her about new growth going through the winter, though.

I'll definitely dig up several on the roadside this spring. The best couple will go into a pot and the rest into the yard for the butterflies.
I'm taking them in tonight. It's too cold for fresh growth I think. I'm also asking around to see if I can get a really old one growing wild out there.

Yes I know. What's the recommended way to keep them from rotting?

@Cajunrider ,

normally we check to what size of wound the plant will heal.
Then make sure we never cut beyond that size.
But remember we work from a drawing and can plan
where everything goes.
Plus 10 to 20 to experiment on.

If you need a compound, the other's will jump in or make a
topic in the General section and ask.
Good Day

Since they are weeds around here, I'm going to experiment on them just for fun. Standing from my kitchen, I can already see two or three among the wild bushes in my own backyard. My neighbor also has a bunch of them that he would be happy for me to dig up.

Picking K's brain,

the Commune de Firenze [ Florence, Italy ] keep the colourful lantanas
like bouquets of flowers. The shrub develops a thick trunk around 3 to 6
inches and is about 6 inches tall.
The cuts are made on thin branches and the taper is extreme.

He was given one, but it did not survive the transfer.

If you have a friend in Florence ypu can get the specifics.

They are dug up in Autumn and put away for Winter.
Good Day

I went away on vacation for a week. Came back and the buds are about 1/2" with some tiny leaves. Looking good so far.

I guess I should have gone ahead and dug up the ones I have access to. Oh well, they'll be there come spring. Thanks for the update.

There is some good info here. I'm glad to know Lantana doesn't really need a hard dormancy period. Here, it is a perennial; but it varies on how harsh the winter is on whether it dies to the ground, or rebuds on hard wood each spring. Containers, even more so, since I've had them fully die in the big buckets after a really harsh winter. I may have to dig one up in spring to play with & see how it trains/shapes. ?

This makes me wonder, can I collect one in zone 10a in December. Lol.

This guy self seeded last year so it is all one seasons growth. It's in amongst the funny succulent and too close to the bougainvillea so it should come out anyway. Think I'll just cut it back for now but you have me wondering.

Lantana make me shudder because they can be so invasive. I have one in my back yard that got up into a privet, and is now throwing growth out of the top of the tree and is easily 20' tall. It is tangled up in some bougainvillea at the ground so it is difficult for me to locate the trunk so I can give it the coup de gras.

I have seen some awesome mini bonsai, but they require constant attention.

When I see them in the yard, I kill them. For these I pretty much give myself permission to try anything I want. So yeah later this month I'm going to put them in bonsai pot simply because except for my shop my lady doesn't allow any plant inside the house unless it is in a nice pot.

I am not so sure about that, although I do think it would probably survive I wouldn't want to risk it. Frost's are always a possibility but not certain, last year we had a real cold snap and all the landscape ones died back. They did bounce back but a newly collected one may not.

If the wife didn't like them so much I wouldn't have them but I think like you if they pop up out of place then may as well have a try, so far I have two that have self seeded that big one and another smaller one plus 3 Olives so free trees are a bonus.
