this is bonsai. what an amazing find, almost a perfect bonsai when you found it! it seemed to me almost no styling necessary, just have it live! very impressive.

Thanks Waltron.......I wish (instant Bonsai that is)........if you note the first set of photos (especially #3), you'll note that the one side (left side of photo) is void of branches and the ones on the right are almost at right angles from the trunk.....so I've had to consistently wire them down and into position, added some bends to shorten them and work the apex. I've removed some branches to harmonize its overall structure. There is also one huge fault at the base-the large two roots that were within the rock fault/narrow crevice where it was growing. Not sure if I can shorten them but will try something during its next repotting.

It’s been a long 7 year haul............if you look at the first and third photos in the first post of this thread you will note that all (ok majority) of the branches (except apex) are all on the one side....so it’s taken a while to move some of them to give the tree more depth and character. Extra needles (last years growth) were cut not pulled and then rubbed off before wiring. Still have to figure out a landscape pot (much shallower than the grow pot it’s in) and try and spread the two main roots apart (or shorten them?). Here are 4 photos .....

Thrilled to find some fellow Bonsai enthusiasts around me! I am pretty new but very interested and determined to do some local collecting.

Nine years since collection.........It is starting to round out nicely (IMHO). I have deliberately left many more branches than needed and it’s back budding very well, with (mostly) nice small needles. If the development of the back budding goes as I think it should, I’ll be able to remove (shorten), more unnecessary branches in 2-3 years.

Thank you for keeping up with your post on this tree for so long @ghues . I am very impressed with how far the tree has come and how well you have done with it. I love the final image.

Vancouver Island is sounding more and more amazing.

Many thanks, I would like to spend more time here at the nut but........life gets in the way, like the wife’s “honey do” list is never completely accomplished 😂. As with many Yamadori, one has to work with what it’s gives you and those long main surface roots on this one, pose difficulties in pot choice and potential fronts. Personally I like them, they tell a story within themselves, I would like to keep them but might try and spread them apart.
After taking the photos this afternoon, I found a potential front that give a great view of the trunk 😁👍
The photo show the wonderful bark on this one.

Summer Update.
After many weeks touring various locations around the yard, this Pinus Contorta Contorta is back in its favourite location at the end of a little foe beach, a corner adjacent the house. It’s done pretty good considering it was repotted this spring, has nice colour, needle length is getting there and next years buds aren’t too big😎. It will get turned every week over the coming months.
