In reading up on trunk chopping I came across many recommendations (at least for certain maples) to make the cuts somewhat concave to allow for better healing. Today I came across an article that recommended rounding the cuts on deciduous trees - i.e., a convex cut. Was wondering if anyone could shed light on based practices when making an angled trunk chop - flat, concave or convex and why.

They're both concave, only one has an "island" in the middle for the callus to grow up and a trench around it lower than the initial cut...I think that middle thing would complicate species that make thick callus tissue, like Bald cypress and oak. It might be fine on "thinner-skinned" species like beech and possibly some hornbeam species.
