Hey folks, new to this site; is there a new contest started yearly? I've been itching to get in one one but am very behind for any of the current contests. Anyone know what the process is like?

Watch this space and wait, alternatively, host your own.

I don’t host since I have 0 power of influence so my suggestions will gain as much traction as well.

Maybe something pops up closer to spring

To expand on this: contests are normally created by any user that has a good contest idea.

You basically make a thread in the main contests forum proposing your idea. If enough people like it and it gains traction, @Bonsai Nut will create a specific sub-forum for it, and the user who proposed it will be the sub-forum moderator/admin.

So, got any ideas @August ? :)

There IS a bunch going now..

But if you wanted a specific contest..

You could brainstorm, in a thread like this, for example: "Does anyone want to do a MAME FICUS contest?"...

And gauge interest.

Then you start a thread in the "Contests Forum"...

But I think this...
Too many already. Join one of them instead.
...is a wise insight.

New contests don't just go and make themselves. If you build it, they will come!
...or something like that.

How about a mame sycamore contest for a little extra challenge?

Just say "Mame Compound Acer".... And be a true jackass!

🤣🤣

Sycamore'd be really neat, though!

Are you suggesting they join a contest started in 2021 or older (I see just one started in the last year - 2022, unless I am not seeing the full list).

I'd say make your own like others are suggesting (I'd be happy to participate, just post an idea). Joining a contest when you are years behind doesn't make sense to me...

Agreed. Plus the 2022 one is basically barred for entry now; you had to buy the tree by December 22. That's okay, I'm sure one will pop up, though with seed season around the corner, I'm feeling antsy

Agreed!

I had not considered this for newer members.

I will help, too.

🤓

Ok.. let's spit-brain-ball-storm.

I said Mame Ficus.

Kanorin refined it to mame sycamore.

That's good.. get it rolling!

Here are some new suggestions...(gotta get my crap ideas out of the way.... Progress! 🤣🤣🤣)

*Fusion contest from seedling or (less than)1cm starter material.

*Kusamono bonanza!

*"Broom"-showdown.

*Windswept forest/with water element (assumed or actual)..

I'll keep thinking...

No wrong answers!

The two ideas above: root over rock or kusamono bonanza. I like those a lot. Quite different than any of the current ones.

How’s about a warp speed styling contest?

like get a new nursery stock juniper under 25$ and we see where you get it in 1 year!

I guess this is something I’d like to do.. like, every year!🤣

The r/bonsai reddit does this!

I like both of those too. Root over rock would probably be the best bet to get people interested. Why not both?

Kusamono bonanza has my vote. It could be as short as 1 season, but still go as long as you want it to.
Been looking for an excuse to motivate myself to start some anyway.

Another noob friendly one might be succulent mame. Jade, portulacaria, etc.

Cement pot build-off

Weed tree dash: have to start with something that invaded your yard

Grocery store seed: eat it then plant it

Here's an idea. Succulent from seed. I like all of these though. Why not do them all 😅

Edit: if anybody else is interested in kusamono bonanza and succulent from seed, let me know. I would be down to help in whatever capacity I can.

Further edit: seeing some very promising and cool stuff from this shop: https://unusualseeds.net/product-category/crassula-seeds/page/6/

What in the world is a Kusamono bonanza? You lot talk like it‘s common knowledge! 🤪 Deets peeps!

I like ROR, Neagari, raft etc. Something more technical. Then again, I would only be a maybe for entry. So many projects, so little time…..
